Food Security

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for a human being. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by a human being and assimilated by the human’s cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. – 1996 World Food Summit
